Eye Examination

All Children's Eye Exams are comprehensive and carried out in a friendly and informal manner centred around your child's personality.

This includes fun games, visual puzzles, colour vision and stereopsis testing. We happily test children of any age tailoring the experience to your child's age and abilities.

It is particularly important for young children to have regular eye exams if there is a family history of refractive error. Early diagnosis is the key to successful visual correction.

A screening test can be carried out in infants with more comprehensive testing possible after the age of 3.

Lens Choice

Thickness
The prescription is always the primary consideration in choosing glasses. If the prescription calls for strong lenses that are likely to be thick, it is important to keep the frames as small as possible to reduce the final lens thickness, round lens shapes also help.

Material
Once you and your child agree on frames that you both like, the next consideration is the lenses. We use plastic scratch resistant lenses as standard but upgrades are available to thinner and lighter lenses which also benefit from built-in protection against potentially damaging UV light.

We also stock a full range of children's sunglasses from babies up, for protection of those very sensitive eyes.

Frame Choice

Children can feel more comfortable about wearing glasses when they are allowed to choose their own frames.

But you as a parent may need to offer subtle guidance if you think certain frames clearly are objectionable, too expensive or inappropriate.

At Castle Street Optometry we have all inclusive glasses that are fully covered by your NHS voucher, and we also offer upgrades to designer frames such as Ray-ban, Nike and more.

Ask for hypoallergenic materials, such as titanium or plastic frames, if your child has shown sensitivity to certain substances.

Our highly skilled and experienced team will help guide you and your child to the best fitting and most suitable choices considering the most important aspects of frame fit for children; the bridge fit, temple length, design and eye centration.
